I want this motherboard for a while now. I think I will find it in Argentina, the country I’m living in right now. Apparently, it has all the features I was needing.
Desde hace un tiempo que quiero ponerle las manos encima a esta placa madre. Me parece que la encuentro más o menos disponible en Argentina, mi país de residencia, y aparentemente, tiene las especificaciones que necesito.
Many use this thing to make a long range radio link. This is way Ubiquity Networks sells radio boards, and antennae and other things like that. But I have another interest: It’ll have a wifi board, but that’s only because our small home server will be super cool if it is a wifi router too. The RouterStation is a computer, and we can put a Linux inside it.

Por eso, esta empresa también vende las placas de red wifi que habría que agregarle para hacer el enlace. Pero yo tengo otro interés. Este equipo se vende con Open-WRT instalado, no sé dónde -ojalá que en la ROM-, pero una de las ideas sería instalarle un Debian, que es algo así como la versión de Linux en la que vale la pena vivir, pero el Open-WRT es suficiente para lo que queremos hacer.
Their website says it has Open-WRT installed, don’t know where, I hope a ROM, but one of my ideas is installing a Debian, the distro it’s worth to live in, but Open-WRT will suffice, as it is an incredible small and powerful version of Linux and it has all the packages I need.
La versión que no dice PRO es la que más me gusta, porque a pesar de tener algunas cositas menos tiene el tamaño perfecto: 12cm x 11cm. La versión PRO tiene unos 15cm x 13cm, aproximadamente, así que no es muy grande la diferencia. Bueno, tiene un conector más de ethernet y un conector de USB externo que me vendrían de perlas, así que también voy a estar pensándolo.
I will go for the non PRO version because it has a smaller form factor: just 12cmx11cm. The PRO version is 15cmx13cm aprox, nothing that big. Well, it has an extra ethernet port, and that wonderful external USB connector, so I will really think about it.

Me falta una caja para meter todo esto, y tengo una caja usada de un Linksys SD2008, que es un switch que murió porque tiene un disipador que no rinde, y termina quemando el micro con el tiempo.

Desde hace unos años vengo despanzurrando equipos Linksys wrt-54gl que son espectaculares y a los que les puedo poner en su interior un lindo Linux, de la mano de Open-WRT. Pero los linksys son equipos limitados y tengo que soldar para agregarle una memoria SD y un poco nervioso me pone. Es bastante fácil la operación, pero molesta.I’ve been hacking the Linksys Wrt-54gl and I love it, but it has its limits. I even use the SD hack, but it involves some soldering and I hate breaking things. They work great with Open-WRT.
El Linksys wrt160nl debería ser un poco mejor que el wrt-54GL, pero no lo estoy consiguiendo en la Argentina, y que podría tener un precio que rondara los 150 u$s o más. Nuestro proyectito, contando sólamente la parte de wi-fi no araña los 180 u$s, con una musculatura muy superior: tiene también un procesador Atheros pero funciona a 680 Mhz, y puede, según el manual, sobreajustarlo a 800Mhz, calculo que con ventilación extra. Si a este pequeño servidor le pedimos que maneje varias conexiones de Internet, y tenemos un patrón complicado en IPTables va a necesitar un cerebro chisporroteante. Además, este equipo de Ubiquity tiene 64Mb contra los 32 que tiene el Linksys de Ram y 16 contra 8 megabytes de flash. Ni hablar de los conectores mini-pci que tiene el RouterStation que nos permiten mejorar sustancialmente las posibilidades de armar algo con cierta escalabilidad.
I couldn’t get my hands on the Linksys wrt160NL, it should be a little better than the WRT-54GL, but it’s not available here, and I’m afraid it’ll be expensive. Our little project costs 180 u$s without the disc, and although it has the same micro, it’s running on 680 Mhz against the 400 Mhz of the 160NL. Double the ram, double the flash: 64 to 32, and 16 against the mere 8M of the 160NL. And it’s really expandable with those lovely 3 mini-pci slots.
Todavía no resuelvo dónde ni cómo voy a poner el disco rígido en esta conexión. Estoy tratando de encontrar una placa mini-pci SATA/CF/IDE y tengo que pinchar a mi proveedor para que se mueva.
